Sky UK Launches Kids TV App Featuring Cartoon Network Shows

Sky UK Launches Kids TV App Featuring Cartoon Network Shows: From The Sky UK Press Release

Sky launched a new mobile app for Android and iOS devices on 31st March just for kids and at no extra cost to millions of Sky families. The Sky Kids app offers a fun and safe way for pre-schoolers to nine year olds to enjoy the widest range of the most popular kids TV programmes including Nick Jr.’s Paw Patrol, Boomerang’s Scooby Doo, CBeebies’ Octonauts and Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time. And they will soon be joined by children’s TV legend Morph, who is set to make his debut on the Sky Kids app later this year in brand new exclusive episodes.

The Sky Kids app features thousands of episodes of kids shows, including 16 of the 20 highest-rated shows, available to watch whenever and wherever they need to be entertained.

To create the best possible experience, hundreds of children and their parents have been involved in the development of the Sky Kids app. The result is an app that kids will love, supported by safety features that parents need. At launch, the Sky Kids app allows multiple age-appropriate profiles to be created and personalised using one of the playful Sky Buddy avatars. Future features available later this year include a sleep mode setting that gives parents the ability to limit viewing time.

In another step in the exciting growth of Sky’s kids offer, Sky will commission its own exclusive original kids content. To start with later this year, in partnership with Oscar-winning Aardman Animation, Sky will premiere new episodes of the legendary Morph alongside brand new short features that encourage kids to create their own characters and films at home. Discussions are already underway with other producers about future projects and there are also plans to produce kids’ versions of some favourite Sky shows.

Lucy Murphy, Head of Kids Content, Sky commented:

“We have worked really closely with lots of children and their parents to design the new Sky Kids app. It means they can watch all their favourite shows in a really engaging way designed just for them. Safety is of fundamental importance so parents will be able to filter what their child watches according to their age. Having lots of great shows for kids has always really mattered to us. Around a quarter of Sky households have children so we know how important it is we give them the very best kids entertainment. That is why we are investing in exclusive new programming starting with family favourite Morph as well as developing future enhancements for the app including even more safety features, live channels and offline viewing.”

Alix Wiseman, Head of Sales and Acquisitions & Executive Producer, Aardman commented:

“Aardman and the creators of Morph are truly excited about partnering with Sky on this original content for their new app. Morph is very dear to our hearts and we hope that he and his mate Chas will entertain a brand new generation of viewers on this platform, as they have their loyal fan-base over the past four decades.”

The app has been created by Sky’s in-house team together with ustwo, the digital product studio behind hit mobile game Monument Valley – winner of Apple’s 2014 Design Award, iPad game of the year and two BAFTAs.

The app ensures Sky remains the best entertainment choice for children and their parents. Sky TV families can already watch over 4,000 episodes of the most watched kids shows on demand through a dedicated Sky Kids tile on the home page as well as the widest range of live children’s channels including Disney Jr, Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon.

The launch of the Sky Kids app comes as new research shows that growing numbers of children are watching TV on mobile devices with 80% having access to a tablet at home. Sky’s own research also shows that although 70% of parents think that TV in moderation is entertaining and educational, almost 60% of parents with children aged 3 to 12 are worried about the types of programmes they are watching. This has meant that building features such as age-appropriate filtering has been a key priority during the development process.

Specially made sponsorship bumpers for Play-Doh Town have been made using Play-Doh, matching Boomerang’s and Cartoonito’s branding identity. The campaign also includes cross website advertising on Cartoon Network UK’s, Boomerang UK’s and Cartoonito UK’s websites.

The winners of the Play-Doh Town story competition will get to see their creations on air on Cartoon Network, Boomerang and Cartoonito in May and June.

From the Turner UK Press Release:

PLAY-DOH, Hasbro’s ultimate children’s staple brand, is getting creative with Turner’s leading kids’ TV channels Cartoon Network, Boomerang and Cartoonito in a new PLAY-DOH Town sponsorship deal which includes TV, digital and social media activity.

To celebrate PLAY-DOH’s 60th birthday this year, Hasbro launched PLAY-DOH Town, a new system of play that inspires creative storytelling through Town-themed playsets, vehicles and figures. To help support this fresh new concept, the popular kids’ channels Cartoon Network, Boomerang and preschool channel Cartoonito have joined forces with Hasbro and the media agency OMD to launch a sponsorship campaign to showcase PLAY-DOH Town’s amazing product range.

Commenting on the campaign, Craig Wilkins, Hasbro Marketing Director, says:

“This year we launched PLAY-DOH Town to celebrate the PLAY-DOH brands 60th anniversary. Additionally, both channels will run 30 second on air competition spots – showcasing the vast range of PLAY-DOH Town playsets available. The competition aims to encourage kids to visit the Boomerang microsite (BoomerangTV.co.uk/Play-Doh) and create their very own PLAY-DOH Town story.

“We’re excited to be working with the incredibly fun and timeless Hasbro brand to support their PLAY-DOH Town 2016 campaign across our kids’ channels, Cartoon Network, Boomerang and Cartoonito. He is thrilled to have someone who loves him, and will do anything to help his new family. Stories follow Chester (the cat), Harold (the dog) and Bunnicula (the vegetarian vampire) in and around their new home in New Orleans as they try to contain supernatural animal activity. On any given day they may cross paths with everything from a ghost gator busting his way through the building’s pipes to a vampire tick that latches on to Harold and takes over his body and mind. Bunnicula is almost always both the cause of and solution to all of their adventures.

Scooby-Doo Voted UK's All Time Favourite Kids TV Show

Scooby-Doo Voted UK’s All Time Favourite Kids TV Show

Sky Kids has commissioned a survey to ask 2,300 parents and children aged between 5 to 9 years old in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland (1,150 parents and 1,150 children) to find out their all time favourite kids show.

After the results were counted and collated, it emerged that Boomerang’s very own Scooby-Doo (including all variants and series) is the UK’s favourite kids show of all time. Scooby-Doo topped the chart at 23%, that’s nearly 1 in 4 people. Since 1969, Scooby-Doo has been entertaining children all over the world. The show’s enduring popularity has no sign of slowing down, this shows that Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Fred, Daphne and Velma will yet to solve more spooky mysteries into the foreseeable future.

Tom and Jerry, another classic animated show that airs on Boomerang UK came in at 2nd place at 22% of the vote (including all variants and series), only narrowingly missing the top spot by 1%. Tom and Jerry is known for its madcap cat and mouse chases and for its slapstick humour which has entertained generations of children.

Ben 10 (including all variants and series) came naturally in 10th place in the combined children and adults statistics, the alien-battling adventure show has been airing on Cartoon Network for over 10 years. A current Cartoon Network favourite, Adventure Time came in at 9th place in the children’s only statistics, its open world approach to fantasy storytelling and its wide variety of characters has made Adventure Time become one of Cartoon Network’s most successful shows of all time.

The research was commissioned by Sky Kids and conducted by research company 72 Point in March 2016.

From The Sky UK Press Release

New research from Sky Kids, reveals Boomerang channel series Scooby-Doo, tops the chart as the nation’s favourite kids’ TV show amongst both nostalgic parents and young children, with 23% of the vote. The results prove that the TV programme, famous for helping solve ghostly mysteries, is as popular today as it was after first bursting onto screens.

The survey of 2,300 kids aged 5 to 9 along with their parents, commissioned to mark the launch of the new Sky Kids app, finds that another timeless show comes in second place, with 22% of parents and children picking Boomerang’s slapstick comedy Tom and Jerry. Joint third are favourites, Nicktoons’ ever-optimistic hero SpongeBob SquarePants and the beloved, British pre-school eOne series Peppa Pig (17%). Fifth place goes to the magical show Ben & Holly (14%), also from eOne.

The research shows whatever the family favourite, kids don’t seem to tire of re-watching their much-loved shows time and time again at a remarkable 53 times a year, compared with parents who admitted to still watching their beloved childhood TV show 12 times in the past 12 months.

Even when children know how an episode unfolds these shows have the qualities that make them so re-watchable, with kids realising the importance of comedy at a young age and picking a TV programme because “it’s funny” (59%). The imaginative stories and playful characters are also reasons why they choose to watch a show over and over again, with 47% of children stating “I like the adventures they go on” and 38% revealing they “love the characters”. Meanwhile, adults say that they cherish watching children’s TV as it’s nostalgic and brings back happy memories of their own childhood (29%), as well as being a great way to bond with their little ones (21%).

Dr Sam Wass, parenting expert and psychologist and known for Channel 4’s award-winning series “The Secret Life of 4-, 5-, and 6-Year-Olds”, commented:

“As parents we spend so much time as the authority figure, imposing boundaries and setting rules, so sitting down to watch TV with your child can help to reset and recharge your relationship. I love that so many children voted for shows and cartoons that their parents also used to enjoy when they were young and that they are all available on the Sky Kids app. Watching and discussing these shows together will allow your child to see the child that was once in you.”

The Sky Kids app is designed for children aged 3-9 and features thousands of episodes of their beloved TV shows, including favourites Scooby-Doo, Peppa Pig and SpongeBob SquarePants. The app, which launched in March and is available to download from both Google Play and Apple’s App Store offers a fun and safe way to enjoy the widest range of the most popular kids’ TV programmes. All of the content is available on demand and gives children their own profile with shows tailored to their age.

Lucy Murphy, Head of Sky Kids Content said:

“It’s great to see Scooby-Doo standing the test of time and remaining a favourite amongst kids and parents. The Sky Kids app has thousands of episodes of kids TV shows, from traditional favourites like Tom and Jerry through to favourites today such as Ben and Holly, so children and parents alike can enjoy their most-loved shows.”

About Sky Kids

Sky Kids is available to download now from both Google Play and Apple’s App Store. The app works on 3G/4G and Wi-Fi and is available for customers at no extra cost, with the Sky Family or Variety bundle or Sky Q.

Sky announced the development of the app with Ustwo in June 2015 as it aimed to build on its position as the best entertainment choice for children and their parents. Sky’s commitment saw the expansion of the kids’ shows available in Sky’s on demand library from 700 to 4,000 episodes making Sky home to more episodes of the most-watched kids’ shows than any other provider in the UK and Ireland.

Following the on-demand investment, a dedicated kids tile was added to the Sky homepage which opens up a one-stop-shop of all the kids’ shows and movies available on demand, all kids TV recordings, plus a quick view of what’s on now on linear channels like Cartoon Network, CBeebies and Nick Jr. Since the kids tile was added, on-demand views have more than trebled.

Sky’s Kids service has been overseen by Sky’s first dedicated Head of Kids Content, Lucy Murphy, who joined Sky in November 2015.

Today (04/05/2016), Sky UK has announced that their NOW TV OTT (Over-The-Top) Internet TV streaming service will be introducing a Kids Pass package, which will be available from Tuesday 21st June. The Kids Pass includes the addition of Cartoon Network, Boomerang and Cartoonito to the service. All children’s content will be accessible through a child friendly interface and will also feature parental controls. The Kids Pass will cost £2.99 a month, no contract necessary.

Due to these changes on the NOW TV service, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr and Disney Channel will move from the entertainment pass to the kids pass.

From The Sky UK Press Release

Online TV streaming service NOW TV continues to boost its customer offer with the launch of the NOW TV Kids Pass. It will be available to buy from the 21st June, offering an easy way to get top kids TV without a contract and for just £2.99 a month.

The NOW TV Kids Pass will let kids watch six dedicated live TV channels, as well as thousands of episodes and box sets on demand from Nickelodeon, Nick Jr, NickToons, Cartoon Network, Boomerang, Cartoonito, CBeebies, CBBC, and Milkshake!.

Whenever they want, kids can enjoy the likes of SpongeBob SquarePants, Paw Patrol and The Powerpuff Girls, Adventure Time and The Amazing World of Gumball which are only available on demand to Sky and NOW TV customers. Later this year, they can watch Morph, following the recent news that Sky is commissioning brand new episodes of the much loved character from Oscar-winning studio, Aardman Animations.

All this will be available to watch via a special immersive user interface (UI) which was designed with both parents and children. It means the UI is not just fun to use, but adds safety controls for parents’ peace of mind.

New features include:

A fun space-themed interface – new characters Dixie, Norbert and Jessie interact with children on screen throughout the viewing experience
Picture led navigation – shows and episodes are identified by characters and episode imagery helping kids easily identify the programmes they love
Favourites rail – the service learns what little ones like so they can quickly and easily access their most-loved shows
Next episode auto-play – means they can watch more episodes of their favourite shows without having to navigate back to the main menu
Parental controls – these include: a screen lock to prevent little fingers accidently changing shows on a mobile or tablet; an ‘escape prompt’ which stops them from exiting the UI by mistake; and a parental PIN which allows parents to set restrictions on what they watch

Gidon Katz, Director of NOW TV, said:

“We want to make sure that everyone in the family gets the best entertainment experience possible and that includes our younger viewers. We’ve created a vibrant, engaging world just for kids, so finding an episode of Dora the Explorer will be almost as fun as watching it. By creating a separate enhanced NOW TV Kids Pass our customers have even more choice when it comes to selecting the shows that are right for them, all with no contract.”

The launch of the NOW TV Kids Pass sees Nickelodeon, Nick Jr and The Disney Channel move out of the NOW TV Entertainment Pass. In addition, from today, Nat Geo Wild will be added as a new channel to the Entertainment Pass, which will continue to offer exclusive access to shows on Sky Atlantic, such as Game of Thrones and must see new show Billions, 11.22.63 on FOX and Harlan Coben’s The Five, on Sky1. Not to mention over 250 Box Sets ranging from Sex and The City, Revenge, Penny Dreadful and True Detective.
